WAIPAWA ATHLETIC SPORTS.
The sports of tho Waipawa Athletic Club wero well jiatronis-ed yesterday, and as each individual member of tho committee and all the officials concerned worked energetically to secure success it is not to be wondered at that everything went as it were by clockwork. The following are the results:—■
Throwing 161b hammer.—lst prize, £1 10s, D. Dcnnohay, 94ft 3in; 2nd, J. Murphy, 70ft 'Jin. Maiden Race 300 yards.~ Ist prize, £3, M. Lyons ; 2nd, £1 10s, C. Young. Eleven others started.
Putting the stone, lGlb.—lst prize, £1 10s, Deimehay, 37ft Sin ; 2nd, J. Fogarty, 33ft 7in. Three others competed.
Waipawa Gun (handicap), 880, 410, and 100 yards.—lst prize, £12; 2nd, £G ; 3rd, £3, with a special prize of £3 for the winner of tho 100 yards event. The race to be decided by points.
First event, 880 yards.—lst five points, J. Parker, 20yds; 2nd, three points, 11. Wynn-Williams, 10yds; 3rd, two points, A. G. Howe, 40yds. Eleven started for this event which was a splendid race, Parker winning by about a yard.
Best bagpipe player. — Ist prize, £2, L Bowden ; 2nd, £(, W. Cross.
Walking Match, li mile—lst prize, £4, A. Percy ; 2nd, £2, F. W. Hemes, Two others also competed. Percy won easily. Time 13mins.
Dancing Highland Fling.—lst prize, £2, J. M. Lockhcad ; 2nd, J. Lockhead ; special prize, Miss O'Neill, a child, who danced very well indeed.
Second event, Waipawa Cup, 440 yards. Ist, live points, J. Parker, 10 yards; 2nd, three points, C. Brausch, 15 yards; 3rd, two points, A. G. Howe, 18 yards. Parker won easily. Eight started.
Hop, Step, and Jump.—lst prize, £2, Barrett, 40ft 3in ; 2nd, Lewis, 35ft llin.
Go-as-you-please Raco, 15 minutes, competitor who covers longest distance in the time to be the winner.—lst prize, £4, M. Barry, 2 miles 'JOG yards; second, £2, S. Biddies, 2 miles 078 yards. Seven started.
Boys' Race, under 14 years, 440 yards. —Ist prizo, £1, W. White; 2nd, lbs, H. Knight. Running High Jump.—-Ist prize, £1 10s, P. M'Grcevy, 5f t 2in ; 2nd, 15s, Barrett, sft ljin. Waipawa. Cup, third event, 100 yards.— Ist, five points, A. C. Norris, 3yds ; 2nd, three points, K. Arthurson, syds; 3rd, two points, C. Young, 4yds. The prizes in the Cup were therefore allotted as follows:—J. Parker, ten points, £12 ; A.C. Norris, live points, £G, and special prize of £3 for tho 100 yards event; A. G. Howe, four points, £3. Vaulting with Pole.—lst prize, £2, Christian, 9ft Gin; 2nd, £1, Russell, Oft sin.
Hurdle Race, 440 yards, over 8 hurdles, 3ft Gin high.—lst prize, £4, N. Carinichael; 2ud, £2, F. Franklin ; eight started.
Boys' Hurdle Race, same distance as above, over 8 hurdles, 2ft Gin high.—lst prize, £1, W. White: 2nd, 10s, J. Duncan. Athletic Club Handicap, one mile.—lst prize, £8, D. Peebles, 100 yds; 2nd, £4, C. Siddles, 15yds; 3rd, £2, 11. Barry, scratch. Nine started. This was a good race. Barry ran well, but failed to catch tho long start man. Bicycle Race (handicap), 3 miles.—lst prize, £5, W. Price, 500 yds; 2nd, £2 10s, W. Maddison, 250 yds. Several other minor events brought au enjoyable day's sports to a close
