HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S BOXING DAY MEETING.
/> President, Captain W. R. Russell. -fr Stowards, J. N. Williams, W. U. Burke, \ C. C. Murray, C. B. Winter, W. Douglas, W. Shrimpton, Allan M'Leau, R. Wellwood, Thomas Bishop, and James Lyon, Judge, W. Shrimpton. Handicapper, J. 0. Evett. Starter, James Lyon. Clerk of the course, A. T. Danvers. Clerk of the scales, B. Ware. Tho day was all that could be wished for by holiday-makers. Tho course was in good order, and the officials, as usual, gave every satisfaction. There wore no accidents of any consequence, few rows, and altoggcthcr tho meeting was a very successful and satisfactory ono. There was only one totalisator on tho ground, and this machine, upon the seven events, put through £3,308. No less a sum than ?.*V) was invested m the machine on tho Hastings Handicap. This is the largest sum that has ever been put on the machine in a single race in Hawke's Bay— a very good criterion as to the prosperity of the district, and of the sporting spirit of the public, may be formed from the fact that in many places the totalisator is run on a 10s ticket," but here tickets were started at £1 ; but it was found, on account of thero only being one machine, tickets could not be issued fast enough to supply tho demand, therefore the tickets wore raised to £2. The only grumbling that was heard on tho course "was on' account of there being only ono machine, as there were many unable to obtain tickets. £221 were taken at the j gates and stands, and tho amount received by tho club from these two sources, namely, these and the totalisator, exactly paid the stakes, leaving the amounts received for nominations, acceptances, entrances, and <T~ privileges to the good, so that at a rough estimate, the club will be a gainer of £150 from this meeting. Tho betting men were noticeable by their absence, there not being a single member of the fraternity on the ground. Tho iirst race of the day was the CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, Of GO soys ; tho second horse to receive 10 soys from tho stakes, distance, 1} miles. C. L. Mitekm'sey's br g Breeze, aged, Gst 71b (J.
