The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce having telegraphed to thoMiiiister for Public AVorks about the stoppage of work on the " unemployed " section of tho Otago Central line :—" Mr Mitcholson replied as folloivs: —"Mr Blair has evidently misunderstood bis instructions. The following teleirram was sent by my directions to Mr Blair ou Saturday :—' Hon. Mr Mitcholson

directs me to point out that the Government do not wish to throw such a large number of men immediately out of employment, yet they must insist on the number being gradually reduced, giving tho preference of work to those who must need it, keeping in view the competency of the men employed, and I am to remind you of telegraphing cverv Saturday tho number of men employed.'" Mr Mitcholson added that he has' now authorised the re-letting of the Deep Stream contract which the first tenderers failed to carry out, and this, he says, will get over the difficult}' of the unemployed.
