Ho has been a most successful sire in England, and his son Peregrine won the 2000 guineas stakes (worth about £5000) and was only beaten by a head for the Derby and was sold for 7000 guineas. It is no use looking at aristocratic breeding, grand appearance and good performances, if Vasco does not succeed with real good mares in begetting racehorses equal to any that have over graced a racecourse. Limited to 20 approved marcs at 10 guineas each. Jffa The imported French Thoroughbred Stallion IfflSA jT\ LADIATOR—AbeauXJ tiful golden Chestnut, 15 hands 3 inches, bred by Count Legrange, got by that wonderful galloping 'machine Gladiateur who gained tho triple crown by winning the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby and St. Lcgcr in 1805 ; dam Nuncia (also dam of Nemesis, winner of the Metropolitan Stakes, Sydney, doing tho 2 miles in 2mins. 33scc, beating 15 others; also dam of Messager, and of Victoirc who won tho Kingsbury Open Steeplechase, carrying top weight, 12st. 21b.), by Nuncio out of Fatima by Elis. 1 Gladiator was never tried to race, but his full brother, Messager, was a rare performer on the flat, over hurdles, and across country, having won tho Northamptonshire Stakes as a 4-year-old, Surrey Grand National Open Steeplechase, the Croydon Grand Hurdle Race, and ran second in the United Kingdom Steeplechase in 1874. He also won many races in Franco, and tho sporting correspondent of tho London Standard pronounced him the very best steeplechaser as a 5-year old. Gladiateur is also grandsirc of Sussex, Sting and other wonderful performers. The performances of Sussex prove him to bo one of the best horses ever bred in Australia: it is needless to enumerate tho number of his victories, except the Grand National Steeplechase of July, 18S1, carrying- toil weight 13st lib. Sting won tho Hawkesbury Grand Handicap, carrying Sst, doing the lh milo in 2 mins. 30 : J sec, the fastest time on record. Gladiator is admitted to be one of the handsomest thoroughbreds in the colony, and is eminently suited for getting racehorses, weight-carrying hunters, hurdlcraccrs, and ladies' and gentlemen's hacks. "** _/gr*l_fev nc Thoroughbred « —Entire Horse— Opawa, by Ravens worth, out of Fairy by Glaucus—Spray by Donizetti —Lady Ann by Whisker —Ravensworth by Touchstone, etc. It will bo seen by referonco to the above pedigree that Opawa is bred the right way for both pace and power, having on the sire's side the grand Whalebone, Waxy and Pantaloon strains, whilst on his dam's side he boasts as equally illustrious line of ancestry. As a racehorse Opawa proved himself a worthy descendant of his high lineage, having won some of the best contested races on this coa3t, giving lumps of weight to his opponents. As a three-year-old, after standing the season, he ran two weight-for-ago races at Blenheim. As a four-year-old, after standing the season, he won tho Wanganui Stakes, £80, weightfor age, beating Folly, Black Eagle,, Satellite, Tambourini, and Maid of the Mill. The next day he came out again, and won the W.J.C. Handicap, of £170, carrying Sst 31b, beating nine others, including Tambourini, Black Eagle, and Maori Weed. In the same month, at Taranaki, ho won the Cup of £50, weight for age, two miles, beating Tambourini after a splendid struggle. Tho same day, carrying 9st 21b, he won the Ladies' Purse, beating Tambourini, Resolution, and Camelia. The next day Opawa placed the T.J.O. Handicap, £100, to his credit, carrying Sst 41b, and then finished the day by Avinning the Railway Stakes in a canter. The following year he again Avon the W.J.C. Handicap, 9st 71b, and Wanganui Stakes, weight for age. Opawa also Avon several other Avoll-contested races. _ It Avill be seen, therefore, that Opawa is well worthy of tho attention of breeders, his pedigree being of the highest strains of winning blood, and his performances unequalled on this side of the world. He is as sound as tho day ho was foaled, and possesses a constitution of unsurpassed excellence. His stock have turned out well, i
