July 27. In the House of Lords, Lord Kiinbcrley stated that the Government intend to adhere to the bill brought in by Mr Hibbert to provide for tho institution of a Local Government Board in Scotland. News from Madagascar states that the repeated attacks made by the Hovas have been repulsed. The Figaro states that the captain of H.M.S. Dryad refuses to admit that Tamata.ve was in a state of siege. The French authorities there have now released the persons arrested. Eleven British soldiers have died from the cholera in Egypt, Cetowayo's son and the remaining chiefs and fugitives have reached British territory. July 20. Seventeen more deaths have occurred among the British troops at Cairo from cholera. The Pall Mall Gazette draws attention to and contrasts the heavy balance of imports over exports in Queensland. The Chinese Government has explained that the massing of its troops on the frontier is for the purpose of repelling the Anuamitc rebels. A Radical deputy in the French Chamber has accused the French railway companies of wholesale bribery of deputies. He refused to give the names. The matter created considerable sensation. July 30. It is calculated that the number killed by the disastrous earthquake experienced on the Island of Ischia is 3000. The western portion of tho island suffered the greatest damage, and that side is said to be completely ruined. Ischia, the capital of the island, escaped injury. Many of the chiefs' of Roman society have been killed.
