FEARFUL CATASTROPHE. — ONE HUNDRED PERSONS DROWNED.

LONDON

July 25. A fearful calamity, involving immense loss of life, has occurred at Baltimore, a city of tho United States situated on the river Patupuco. A number of Roman Catholic pleasure-seekers were picnicing on the banks of the river, when a large number of them congregated on a small jetty which projects into the stream. AVithout the slightest warning the structure gave way, and the crowd "was precipitated into the river. A scene of terrible confusion ensued. Some few were able to reach the shore, but the great majority were swept away by tho current. It is estimated that one hundred persons, chiefly women and children, were drowned.
