W. G. Garrard, the labor agitator, has served a writ on Mr L. Cotter, solicitor and registration officer for City North, claiming £500 damages for false imprisonment when prosecuted by that official for alleged fraudulent enrolment of voters on the roll for City North. In the declaration Garrard states that on October 13th, 1881, defendant imprisoned him for nine hours, and got him placed under police supervision for throe months, wherefore he claims in respect of the said imprisonment and police supervision £500, that being the extent of the damage he suffered by reason of Ms consequent loss of employment, injury to character, and breach of an agreoment to proceed to England. The case will not come before the Court before the 18th of July next. Wellington, This day. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday a disreputable character named Julia O'Byrne was committed for trial on a charge of entering a dwelling , and stealing wearing apparel to the value of £10. The three men who were arrested for creating a disturbance at the opening , of the Salvation Army campaign were lined £5 each and costs to-day, or fourteen days' imprisonment, and one of them, for assaulting the police, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment without the option of a fine. In the latter case notice of appeal was given.
