FIRE IN WELLINGTON.

AVellington, This day

At a few minutes to 6 o'clock last night a fire broke out in a nine-roomed house in Abel Smith-street OAvned and occupied by Mr Lawrence. The family had tea between 4 and 5 o'clock in the kitchen, and then went into the parlor, AA'hen attention was drawn to the smoke, and the kitchen was discovered in a blaze. The flames spread very rapidly, only a little of the front room furniture being saA-ed. The house Avas insured in the National office for £400, and the furniture for £250 in the Union office. The fire spread rapidly to an adjoining fiveroomed cottage owned and occupied by Captain Short, of tho Comet, near Lyell. The contents were got out safely. Captain and Mrs Short Avere both absent from Wellington, but the family occupied the house, which was insured in the South British office for £250. It is not known if the furniture was insured- The house of Mr Prouse AA-as also on fire, but it Avas not much damaged, and the contents were removed. The house and furniture was insured for £500 in the South British office, but the loss is trifling. Another cottage, owned by Mrs Mears, also caught, but Aery little damage was done ; it Avas insured for £100 in the National office. The fire brigade arrangements Avere very unsatisfactory.
