SATURDAY'S BOAT RACE.
The weather, which for the past week had been anything but promising, proved on Saturday'exceptionally fine, and, _ although perhaps the wind was rather light to thoroughly test the sailing capabilities of the various craft, the sea, by way of a counterpoise, behaved itself like the proverbial mill-pond. A most punctual start was effected at 2.30 p.m., the boats, namely, Wave Queen, Revenge, Osprey, and Comet, which had taken up a very good line, swerving and filling away simultaneously on the starboard tack. At first it appeared that tbe first three mentioned boats, who kept well together, had rather the best of it, but the Comet, who had taken a long board out across the tail of the ebb tide, was found to have secured first place, and passed the Bluff buoy ahead, with the Revenge, Osprey, and Wave Queen next in order, each some minutes later. After passing the buoy moored off the town the Comet, Wave Queen, and Osprey took a board out towards tho Kidnappers, thus hoping to clear the Pania on the next tack, whilst the Revenge at once went about and stood bade across the bay. By a slight shift of the wind this secured the latter boat the windward position, which she held and strongly increased until reaching and rounding" the Pania buoy about half-an-hour ahead of tho Comet, the Osprev being some twenty minutes latter still. The Wave Queen was met by the Revenge nearly a mile to leeward of the Pania, and j as she found that she was out of the race she slacked her sheets and ran home in her company. The Revenge arrived at the <-'oal at '5.24 p.m., the Comet, at 0 p.m., and the Ospi-ey at r..30 p.m. The former boat, haviiur scored six points during this series against the Comet's three, Wave Queen's two, and Osprey's one point, thus claims Mr J. 11. Vautier's cup for the year. A mead of praise is due to Mr L. C. Galbraith, who acted as timekeeper and starter during the series, for the efficient way in which he performed, his onerous duties.
