Christcuurch, This day. Tire first auction sale of pastoral CroAvn land in Canterbury under tho deferred payment system was held in the Provincial Council Chamber yesterday. There Avas a large attendance."' Mr J. H, Baker, chief surveyor, conducted the sale. 30,224 acres 2 roods Avere sold for .£59,802 3s, the average price being £1 18s 3d per acre. _ The best priccAvas£3 7s per acre, obtained for a block of 2014 acres at Blackballs, AVaikari district. The land submitted was in the Hororata, KoAvai, Teviotdale and AVaikari districts. Dunedin, This day. A sale of runs and deferred payment pastoral sections rvas held yesterday, but of eighteen runs offered only .seven Avere sold, and of eight deferred payment sections only two were disposed of. The Otago School Commissioners have passed a resolution agreeing that one-third of a block of 20,000 acres at AVaikaia should be disposed of on the perpetual leasing system, but added the following to the resolution : — " The foregoing resolution Avas passed at the urgent request of the Government, in consequence of their threat that unless it was agreed to they Avould decline to open the land for settlement, the perpetual leasing system being in the opinion of the majority of the Commissioners an objectionable mode of dealing with the cndoAvment."
