THE KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL'S ACCOUNTS.—A PRETTY STATE OF AFFAIRS.
CiinisTCiruncii, This day. At tho Kaiapoi Borough Council meeting last night the auditors reported a deficiency of .£lOl in tho accounts for tbe past year. A report on the special audit of accounts from ISGB shoAved that most of the dog tax and notebooks and numerous A'ouchers are missiuc-, and that no petty cash account had been kept since July, 1871. Since the Stamp Act came into force not more than 25 per cent, of the A-ouchcrs had been paid before the vouchers were signed. There had been great laxity every year in auditing the accounts, but iv the absence of the books mentioned it Avas utterly impossible to find out the deficiencies. There was a sum of £250 found in the cash book to the credit of tho general account but there Avas no entry in the bank pass book, .so the cashier at the bank could not say Avhat had become of it. Tho report avms referred back to the auditor for further information.
