THE OPENING OF KAWHIA TO EUROPEANS.
Auckland, This day. The Hon. Mr Bryce and the Hon." Mr Rollcstou and party landed at Kawhia on Friday evening , , and -were, well received by the natives, who brought numerous presents of food. On Saturday Captain Fairchild buoyed the channel of Kawhia harbor, and found that he could go in and out with the Stella at dead low water. Mr Percy Smith, the Chief Surveyor, has planned a township. The Hon. Mr Bryce had an interview with Hone Wetere, the principal chief of the district, and the latter went on board the Stella in the evening and had a long talk with the Defence Minister. Captain Fairchild sent up it number of rockets, which greatly pleased the natives. On Sunday Mr Bryce and Mr Rolleston rode round to Aotea, and saw ;i large district, with which they were well pleased. All on board the Stella were gratified with .the beautiful and fertile appearance of the Kawhia district. Yesterday the Ministerial party came on overland to Alexandria, accompanied by a .special em-respondent of the Herald. 'Hie Stella, with the Undcr-Secrctary of the Native
Department, Mr T. W. Lewis, on board, sailed for Onehunga, arriving last evening. Wellington, This day.
The Government have received information regarding Kawhia that everything had been satisfactorily arranged. On the approach of the steamer Stella the Maoris gave three cheers, and on landing the party were greeted with a Maori welcome. One of the leading chiefs pointed out the boundaries of the town, aud the survey is proceeding with the natives as ehainmen. The depth of Avater on the bar is eighteen feet, and near the township it is registered at four fathoms. The Hons. Mr Bryce and Mr Rolleston, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Rolleston, rode through from Kawhia to Alexandra.
