CHRISTCHURCH.
December 28. The soutb-west storm which set in last night still continues. An immense quantity of rain fell during tbe night, and it is feared that the wind and rain combined will have done considerable damage to the grain crops. A man who gave his name as Samuel Marshall died in a cell at the police station yesterday morning. He was found lying on a seat at the railway station the previous night, evidently snfferine under tbe effects of drink, and had a bruise on his temple which looked like the result of a fall. He was visited during the night by the watch-house keeper, and at 3 a.m. was all right, but three hours afterwards was fouad dead. He was a middle-aged man of stout build, and is supposed to have arrived by one of the south trains last night.
