James Crowley, a farm laborer on Mr David Nathan's estate, Whitefoord Park, Turanga, near Howick, murdered his wife Ellen yesterday with a steam iron as she was leaving home to go toJMaes at Howick. Her features were battered to a pulp so as to be unrecognisable. The tragedy reveals a sad story of domestic misery. The wife is said to have ill-treated Crowley's little daughter by his first marriage. There was no issue by the second wife. Crowley was arrested by Special Constable Gill, and brought to Auckland late last night. He seems perfectly indifferent to his fate. He said that his wife had been nagging at him all Saturday night; that he became frenzied; did not know what he was doing ; and felt mad. At an inquest on the body of John Winter, who was found dead in a shanty at Ponsonby, a verdict of death from natural causes was entered. At the annual meeting of Tattersall's Olub the report showed a good surplus after paying all liabilities. Mr John Kirkwood was re-elected President.
