REEFTON.

November 2

Messrs Gassier and party, all miners at Marnia, within a mile of the route of the supposed East and West Coast railway, report the discovery of quartz reefs forty miles from Reefton in the direction of Christchurch, and near Cannibal Gorge. They obtained fine gold in all of the reefs, and near another lode found a piece of quartz with 5 dwts. of gold in it. The reef is four feet thick, and they will take up tools from here to cross-cut the reef and test it. The formation of the country is said to be the same as at Reefton. The party also report the existence of several coal seams in the same locality. A small wayside hotel near Reefton was burnt down yesterday afternoon. The place was fully covered by an insurance of £400 in the Imperial office.
