October 31

The residence of Mr J. Cook at Makara was burned down this morning. Only a little bedding was saved, Nothing was insured, and the loss is between £400 and £500. The cause is unknown, the roof being first observed on fire. Mr John Knowles, Under-Secretary for Public Works, has received a lengthy leave of absence on the ground of serious ill-health. Mr Benzoni, Assistant UnderSecretary, takes over the duties.
