GISBORNE.

September 6

An elderly married woman named Lewis hanged herself at Te Hapara yesterday afternoon. She was seen alive at 1 p.m., and was discovered hanging dead by her husband at 5 p.m. Her neck was broken, and the act was apparently deliberate. The husband declares the deceased to have been in low spirits, and to some extent unaccountably wild in her actions for some time past. The police have no suspicion of foul play. A meeting of the Poverty Bay Jockey Club was held on Monday night. A very satisfactory balance-sheet was read. Another meeting is convened. Good prizes are to be run for at the next race meeting. There is a general feeling of regret for the death of the late William Wallers.
