November 10.

.The police have warned the licensed victuallers of Dunedin that they intend enforcing the provisions of the new Act with respect to the front doors of the hotels being locked on Sundays, and proceedings will be taken against those who do not comply. It has been decided by the licensed victuallers to refuse to comply with the Act, in order that the matter may be tested, as they consider the provisions very arbitrary, troublesome, and useless. The Daily Times' sporting correspondent cables over that Sir Modred and Somnus have been seized for debt, and a lawsuit is pending. The subject is causing a great deal of excitement in Melbourne. A four-roomed house in Castle-streetj occupied by Mr Whitelaw, has been burned down. The loss is stated to be £200, which is uninsured. Tbe sports yesterday were greatly interfered with by the rain, which fell heavily in the afternoon. Mr Oliver goes to Wellington to-day to remain there till after the election.
