October 17.

Drunkenness is on the increase here. Thirteen persons were charged with that offence at Court this morning. The decision in the case of Garrard, charged with personation, was reserved till Wednesday to allow the magistrate time to look into the authorities quoted by defendant's counsel. Mr Mitchelson has finally decided to stand for Marsden.

The first of the compensation claims against the Government in connection with the railway reclamation is proceeding in the Supreme Court to-day, and other actions are pending. Mr Jackin claims £600 for the deprivation of the water frontage. The dispute between Mr Ring and the Patetere Land Company regarding the ownership of 800 acres of land has been settled by Ring being allowed to have the prior claim.
