DUNEDIN.

October 17

Two cottages in South Dunedin have been burned down. The insurances are £75 in the North British and £100 in the Northern offices.

The bush fires on the Peninsula on Friday are affirmed by the oldest settlers to be the severest known to them. Large areas of bush, miles of fencing, and a number of buildings have been totally destroyed. A thousand pounds worth of property is lo9t. The Harbor cheese factory which was among the buildiogs burned, was insured in the Norwich Union office for £150.

Mr Jago has declined to contest the Peninsular seat on account of business engagements. The schooner Owake was insured in the National office for £1000. Her crew consisted of A. Pully (master), John Lary, Charles Close, J. McAlpine, and James Ramsay. The cargo was wholly of coal.
