TRAINING NEWS.

(Br Battle-axe.) I was out on the course on Wednesday, and saw Foul Play and The Squire sent two miles. The former goes as if his feet are troubling him, and is very stout. I hardly think he can be got fit for the October meeting. The Squire is a nice mover, and he ought to be a dangerous one for the Guineas. Mischief, with the sweaters on, was sent next, Mavis accompanying her for the first mile. Mischief then went by herself for a mile, Mavis again joiniog her. Both these mares are going well. Captain Russell's Kincraig and Nellie did some serviceable work, and Badsworth did walking exercise. I noticed that the improvements to the course are being pushed forward, and I think when finished it will be second to none in New Zealand.

On my road home I caught Wheeler working his horse on Henare Tomoana's course. My Dream and Morning Star were sent two miles, the last half mile coming home a clinker. My Dream has improved greatly since last season, and ought to pay his way this year. Morning Star is as nice a stamp of a hurdle horse as I have seen. In fact I think Wheeler has a good substitute for Matau. Merlin was worked elowly with sweaters on ; he is very big.
