The following are the returns of the public account for the laet quarter, shillings and pence being omitted :—■ Receipts.—Assets of the previous year since realised (including £20,000 on account of sale of the Wellington Supreme Court site), £25,103 ; stamps, £32,006 ; land tax, £2186; leer duty, £l«, 248; railways, £196,878 ; postal, £33,535; telegraphic, £16,879 ; judicial, £13,454 ; land transfer and deeds registration, £11.525 ; registration and other fees, £9,955 ; marine, £3,306 ; miscellaneous, £12,281; land sales, £72.153; depasturing licenses, &c, £36,072 ; miscellaneous territorial revenue, £1296; miscellaneous recoveries, £4,675. Total receipts, £793,158. Expenditure.— Liabilities of previous years since paid £4335; Civil list, £8074 ; interest and sinking fund, £313,079; appropriations under special Acts, £10,429; subsidies to counties, &c, £60,379; one third proceeds of land sold on deferred payments, £1,309 ; New Plymouth Harbor Board endowment, £886 ; Ellesmere and Forsyth reclamation, &c, £1069 ; Legis* lative, £6043; Colonial Secretary's department, £56,480; Treasury, £11,651; Justice, £31,417; postal and telegraphic, £58,577; Customs, £19,914; stamps, £5402; education, £68,113; native, £653; mines, £2015; public works, £11,3073; defence, £62,494; lands £34,286 ; services not otherwise provided for £4817. Total expenditure of consolidated fund (less £38,500 transferred from public works fund for contingent defence), £836,095. The expenditure in excess of receipts for the quarter was therefore £40,300. Of other revenues which go to local bodies the gold duty realised £9,127; and goldfields' revenue, £4260. The expenditure of the public works fund amounted to £426 944, the chief items being—Railways, £238,056 ; roads £3697; contingent defence, £38,509; public buildings, £36,978 ; miscellaneous public works, £18,322 ; land purchases, £17,818; immigration, £15,139.
