WAIROA COUNTY JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

Third Annual Meeting

The above races were held in Messrs Duff's paddock on Thursday, 13th January, and attracted a large number of spectators, many of whom came up the river in the Boojum, Result, and Maori. The weather was beautiful, and the course in splendid order. The arrangements were admirable, and nothing was wanting or deficient. There were bookmakers by the dozen, a totalisator, a monkey sweep, a canary sweep, besides roulette, whirligig, and a number of tables for dice throwing purposes. The totalisator was in the saddling paddo3k, into which sacred precinct the Club charged a fee of half-a-crown for entrance. This may have proved remunerative to the Club, but the totalisator would have done better had it been outside. The monkey sweep was the grand attraction for the natives, who yelled with delight when Jacko' came down the pole and drew out the lucky number. The takiQgs at the gates came to a little over £60, which will give a good idea of the number of people present. In all there were eight races, as follows : — HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Of 30 soys.; 2 miles. Skysail 1 Rawenata 2 Rattan, Lizard, and Rebel Chief also started. At the first hurdle Rattan fell, throwing his jockey, who, however, speedily remounted, but had no show. The race waß pretty well all through between Rawenata and Skysail. At the last hurdle Rawenata unfortunately tripped and fell, the jockey, however, getting on again quick enough to bring his horse in second. Skysail first. HACK HUHDLE RACE Of 10 soys; one mile.
