Election for South Ward
The election to fill the vacancy in the Council created by the resignation of Mr McVay took placeyesterday, and resulted in a victory for Mr Wall by four votes. Canvasing had been carried on by both candidates with considerable vigor for a week past, and the large number of votes polled shows the great interest taken in the contest by the ratepayers. At about 7 o'clock in the evening the Returning Officer, Mr Q. S. Cullen, an«
nounced, from the door of the polling*jooth, the following result : — Henry Hoyle Wall ... 148 Edward Ashton 144 Aud declared Mr Wall duly elected. Mr Wall thanked the electors for placing him at the top of the poll, although his majority was only small. He would make no promises, but trusted by his conduct in the Council to merit the confidence placed in him.
