WAIROA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.;
January 8, 1881
Our little township has suddenly assumed a very " horsey" appearance. Race horses of various degrees of excellence are being led up and down our main street, carefully covered with clothing, which effectually hides both their beauty and their blemishes from the vulgar gaze. Delicate looking jockeys, also well wrapped up, are knocking about in a knowing sort of manner with the bookmakers and the man. May they all do well. Where the carcase is there shall the eagles be also. There must be money hidden somewhere in Wairoa.
The tangi hanga that left here for Napier to cry over Tareha returned on Tuesday afternoon in good spirits, and with enough provisions to last them till they dig their potatoes. As the crop of this valuable tuber has been a poor one this season, the Wairoa natives •will have no objection to the Government sending another steamer or two for them. Calling for tenders would reduce the cos* of passage considerably.
The mouth of the river is remarkably good just now, and I trust will keep so at any rate till after the races. Both the Fairy and Result, on going out on Wednesday, had to wait at the heads till slack high water on account of the flood tide.
A sort of compromise has been come to about the Mohaka ferry between Mr Sim and the Mohaka members of the County Council. I shall be able to give you more information on this subject after the next Council meeting. We are badly off here for Justices of the Peace for the purpose of witnessing signatures and attesting affidavits, &c. We never had more than four J.P.s in this district. One resigned.long ago, two have died, and the fourth would rather walk nine times round his sheep run than perform any of the duties appertaining to his office. While there are men in this County almost dying to have the honor conferred on them, and who would, I feel sure, sit on the Court House steps for six months, so anxious would they be to serve their country.
The next sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court here will be on the second day of February.
