WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.
THUKSDAT, JANUARY 6
The Council met at 11 o'clock,
Present—Mr Sydney Johnston (chairman), Colonel Herrick, Messrs Levy, Rathbone, Dillon, and Smith.
The outward and inward correspondence was read.
The resignation of Mr Poole as poundkeeper at Pcrangahau was accepted. The following report from the road overseer was read :—
Patnngata Riding.—Hickey's contract for metalling part of the Homewood-road has been completed very satisfactorily. Fleming's contract for making 28 chains of the Patangata, road is in good progress, and will he completed in 14 days ; I ask for authority to get the same metalled, tho tenders to close by the next meeting of tho Council. Waipawa Riding.—The timber has been delivered for a small bridge on the WaipawaTamumu road. A contract has been let for 18 chains of side cutting and foundations on the Waipawa-Homewood-road, as ordered by the Council. The tracing for a read above Waldman's, on the Hampden-road, is not quite completed, but will be ready before the next meeting of the Council.
Ruataniwha Riding.—The money voted for the Ellingham-road has been expended in making drains and culverts and other improvements from Mitchell's bridge to the bush. The money voted at last meeting for work in tho Makaretu district has not been expended, the settlers being otherwise employed. I propose to postpone expending the money till February or March. Waipukurau Riding.—Peebles' contract for forming 45 chains of the Wallingford road will soon be completed, and tenders will be called for metalling tho same. Tenders will be laid before you to-day for the delivery of 500 yards of gravel on Newman's Flat.
Eparaima Riding.—ln accordance with instructions I saw Mr Bird, who threatened to close the road now in uso beyond Wallingford, and I examined the different roads leading through his land.
Porangahau Riding.—Crosses bridge is re-erected. Ab instructed, I visited Wainui and examined the line of road formed by Messrs Herbert. The fence has been erected on the line laid off by Mr Hallett. I have made a bridle track at the crossing of the creek so as to make the place passable for horsemen. I would recommend the expenditure of £50 on the flats in the Wainui valley so as to improve the road leading to the shipping place.
Mr Dillon moved, and Mr Rathbone seconded, that the road overseer be instructed to call for tenders for metalling tbe portion of the ?atangata-road referred to in his report, the tenders to be sent in before next meeting. Carried. Mr Rathbone moved, and Mr Levy seconded, that the road overseer be directed to take such means as he may think fit to abate the nuisance caused by the sewer at the approach the Waipawa River on the main-road. Carried.
Mr Smith moved, and Mr Dillon seconded, that the road overseer be ininstructed to see Mr Bird respecting his
threatened closing of the road now in u?e beyond Wallingford, and either arrange to buy some ground from Mr Bird or exchange some land with him in lieu of that through which the road runs. Carried.
A number of accounts were passed for payment.
Some discussion took place respecting the collection of the dog tax, the question being whether the collection of the tax should be let for a lump sum or the police should be got to collect it. Ultimately the decision of the question was postponed till the next meeting, and the clerk was instructed to procure the necessary books for the registration of dogs. It was decided that tenders be called for the supply of dog collars. The Council then adjourned.
