CHRISTCHURCH.
January 5. A man named T. N. Wilson attempted to drown himself in the river Avon yesterday, but was rescued by two passersby.
A public meeting will be held on Friday to receive the report of Messrs Thornton and Brown, who recently made a flying survey of the proposed West Coast railway, and to consider the advisability of forming a company to construct the line.
The weather continues very dull and showery. *
The trial of Wiremu Wharepa, the Chatham Island murderer, is now proceeding at the Supreme Court.
