NAZI REPRISALS
Terror Against French LONDON, July 1. The death roll of Frenchmen, who have fallen victim to German execution squads is increasing daily, says the Daily Telegraph’s” Zurich correspondent. Death sentences are carried out almost hourly in towns and villages, often publicly. The German commandant in one town ordered the mayor to name 50 hostages, who would be shot as a reprisal for the killing of four German officers. He refused. whereupon he was executed in the market square. Fifty hostages selectee bv the Germans were then shot. Mass arrests occurred in the Landes Department, where 100 farms were searched and a large number were razed. All males between the ages of 16 andl 60 have been taken into custody m some districts of the Bordeaux region The Germans have formed 15 new security battalions, composed partly ot foreign volunteers. Their mam task is to prevent sabotage of railway lines, locomotive depots, and industries. Severe fighting is reported from the Marne, Ardennes, and Garonne areas.
