Protest At Increase By University Senate
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.l CHIHSTCHURCH, June 28.
The action of the New Zealand University Senate in increasing the degree examination fees, which is the subject of a protest by the Canterbury University College Students’ Association, is under review b.v flic Price Tribunal. In a statement this afternoon, the Stabilization Commission said that a different system was being introduced by the senate, but that the increase in fees decided u]>on was undoubtedly too high. The matter find accordingly been referred by the commission to the Price Tribunal, and an early pronouncement could be expected. Mr. T. E. Eggleton, president ot the Canterbury University College Students Association, said: “With the rapid approach of July I*l, the date when the majority of the examination fees for the 1944 New Zealand University examinations fall due. student opinion is fully aroused to the action of the university senate, the governing body of the New Zealand University, in unreasonably increasing Hie fee.- for the annual examinations. While some justification might be found for the charging of students for each paper, instead of each subject, as in the past, it was felt.” said Mr. Eggleton, “that tlie sum now charged, 17/- a paper, was unduly excessive.”
