EVASION OF TAX

Restaurateur Fined £4OO (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 23. The maximum penalty of £lOO on each of four charges of wilful evasion of income tax was imposed on Lawrence Vodanovich, restaurant proprietor; by Mr. F. 11. Levien in the Magistrates’ Court this morning. Mr. Cleal. for the Income Tax Department, said the offences were alleged to have been committed in respect of income returns for four years from March. 1940, onwards. Investigations by an inspector into defendant’s business revealed that the evasion of tax over a period of seven years involved £1322. and the deficiency in regard to social security charges was £563. making a total of £lBB5. Vodanovich put the blame on a part-time bookkeeper, who in turn blamed defendant.
