MILITARY POLICE ASSAULTED

A fracas in a Wellington street on Saturday night, during which two members of the military police were assaulted, had a sequel in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, when TV illiam Callaghan, a Maori labourer, aged 21, appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., on two charges of assault. Accused pleaded guilty to one charge and said he “was not sure about the second. It was stated in evidence that. Callaghan and some Maori soldiers created a disturbance in Willis Street by hitting out at American servicemen who passed them and by annoying girls. An American sailor was knocked out , and the M.P.’s who tried to intervene were attacked. One of them was thrown onto the street and kicked, necessitating his removal to hospital for medical attention. A girl who was with the sailor was pushed over. A policeman arrived on the scene, but the fighting had stopped. ‘“I never did all that damage o n my own,” said accused when asked if he had anything to eay. , , , „ ; L “I don’t suppose you did, but this fighting must stop,” said the magistrate when imposing sentence of one month’s imprisonment on each charge, to be cumulative.
