He is a home-bred colt by Blue Peter from Jiffy, who goes back to the liue from which the present Lord Rosebery's father bred many winners. It gave Lord Rosebery much satisfaction that his previous Derby winner, Blue Peter, should have been the successful sire. The race was run at a slow pace till the seven furlongs, after which it suddenly quickened. Detailed results are:— NEW DERBY STAKES, of £2O each and £BO extra for starters, witli £3OOO added. The feature of the Derby result is that the three placed horses are sons of Derby winners. Blue Peter winning for Ocean Swell’s owner in 193 G. Bois Roussel in 1938. and Windsor Lad in 1934. The Rosebery family has possessed tho blood from which Ocean. Swell ■descends for many years. It is the blood of Illuminata, whose son Ladas (by Hampton) won a Derby in 1894 for a previous Lord Rosebery. Ocean Swell’s dam. Jiffy, is by Hurry On from Juniata bv Junior (son of Symington) from Samphire by Isinglass from Chelandry by Goldfinch from Illuminata. Samphire was a. half-sister to Neil Gow (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas) and to Popinjay, ancestress of the successful family raced and ' bred from by Lord Astor, which included Book Law (St. Leger), Pogrom (Oaks). Field Trial, Saucy Sue (Oak*,), Tea Tray, who did well as a stallion in New Zealand, and Magpie. one of the best sires in Australia. Other classic winners from the same taproot were Cicero (Derby), Chelandry (One Thousand Guineas), Vaucluse (One Thousand Guineas). Prince Palatine (St. Leger), Beam (Oaks), Light 'Brocade (Oaks), Bettina (One Thousand Guineas), and a host of high-class winners. including Trimdon, Foxhunter, Rossendnlc (a successful sire in Australia), Night Raid (sire of Phar Lap and Nightmarch), Soli-citor-General. Blue Peter, the sire of Ocean Swell, was the best three-year-old of his year In 1039 when he won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, and probably would have completed the Triple Crown had the St. Legqy been run. This event was set down for September of that year, but the outbreak of war caused it to be cancelled. Blue Peter's early success as a sire of classic winners is of particular Interest to New Zealand, for his younger lialf-lirotfier, Neptiibc. by the champion sire Hyperion, was Imported to this country last year by Mr. .T.
