AMERICAN OWNER WINS OAKS STAKES
LONDON, June .16. On the first day of the Newmarket summer meeting the Oaks Stakes resulted: — NEW OAKS STAKES, of £l’s each and £5O extra for starters, with £2OOO added. For three-year-old fillies. One mile and a half. HYCILLA (Mr. W. Woodward), 9.0 .. 1 MONSOON (Mr. W. H. Phillips), 9.0 .. 2 KANNABIS (Lord Harewood), 9.0 .. 3 Won by a length; one length and a half. Time, 2.30 3-5. (Winner trained by C. Boyd-Rochfort.) Mr. William Woodward, owner of the Oakss winner, is a prominent American owner and’breeder who has raced extensively in England. Among his best horses of recent times were Omaha, Flares, Boswell and Brown Betty. Boswell won the St. Leger in 1936, Brown Betty the One Thousand Guineas in 1033 and Flares tho Ascot Gold Cup in 1938.
