TOYS WILL AWAIT THEM

Polish Children Coining To New Zealand

There is a wealth of sympathy and kindly feeling of helpfulness for the people and children of the oppressed natious in this country. Mrs. T. 0. A. Hislop’s last act as mayoress of Wellington was an appeal to people all .over New Zealand for toys for the 700 Polish children who are to arrive in New Zealand some time this year, as soon as transport can be provided to bring them here from the East. Count K. Wodzieki, Polish Consul-Gen-eral, who knew nothing of the appeal till it was made, was delighted at the response, not from Wellington only, but from all parts of New Zealand. All the gifts and the names of their givers cannot be published, but- here are a few examples: One gift was a large box of toys, including a teddy bear, fine rabbit, fascinating dolls, and m . a py other things. “Please call me Dick' was the label stitched on to a comfortable woollen-clad doll, sent from Hokitika; while Allan and Jeannie, from Hawera, forwarded a cleverly knitted grey elephant. “Will you accept a rockinghorse came a message from one. Polish children adore rocking-horses, so this one is going to be conveyed to Pahiatua by the Red Cross Society, there to await the juvenile Polish invaders. Count Wodzieki wishes to thank Mrs. Hislop for her kindly thought and act, and all those who answered her appeal for something that “would give a little joy to the innocent children of Poland who have endured so much.”
