GIFTS FOR SAILORS

Lady Newall Visits Packers Yesterday morning when the Overseas Sailors’ Gift Packing Committee in Wellington met to prepare about 300 gifts for overseas merchant sailors. Her Excellency Lady Newall, accompanied by Miss N. Walton, paid a visit to the packers, giving much pleasure bj r her presence. There have been 23,705 of, these parcels sent forward in many ships, a proof of the real interest and approval of New Zealand people for the work of the gallant men of the sea. Gifts of books, papers, etc., have been supplied from different parts of New Zealand, and more of these would be appreciated by the packers. Beautiful woollen goods have also been sent from many places, and these are bestowed after inquiry by Captain Macindoe or Mr. McCallum from senior officers of the ships. Her Excellency spoke briefly of her recent voyages and gave generous praise to all sailors, their courage and cheerfulness under all circumstanees. She was welcomed bj’ Mrs. M. H. Chatfield, M.8.E., convener of the committee, the maj’oress, Mrs. Appleton, Mrs. Harley Brown, president of the Flying Angel Committee, Mrs. Rollett, president of the British Sailors’ Society, women’s branch, Miss Edwin, and other members of the committee.
