Germans Expect Soviet Offensive Soon
LONDON, May 16. The present operations in the Carpathians are reported to be a small-scale “Red Indian” type of warfare, but Berlin commentators warn the Germans that the Red Army is likely to launch an offensive soon. The German news agency's military commentator, reporting the continuous massing of the Russians at Lvov and Kovel and on the middle Seret, said: “German quarters expect the Russians will resume large-scale attacks ou these sectors in the very near future.” A Berlin- radio war reporter said the Russians were making far-reaching preparations for the renewal of the offensive on lhe central front. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent says that such battles ns are now being fought flare up from small incidents. The Russians seized a useful hill on one sector. Bitter fighting developed, in which the Germans were driven back, losing <l)v men and 14 tanks.
