FISHING AT TAUPO
Good Season Experienced
Dominion Special Service.
AUCKLAND. May 17. The Taupo fishing season, which closed on Sunday, was undoubtedly the best for the past five years. Fishing generally was good, though hard. Limit bags were rare, but the sport was excellent. The improved condition of the fish was no doubt due to the raising of the lake level producing new feeding grounds and the fact that the smelt was very plentiful again this year. Fish up to llilb. were taken in the Tongariro River, and eight and ten-pounders were quite comm°The raising of the lake level has on the whole had a detrimental effect on the eastern side, while it has improved conditions on the western side of the lake. Such places a s Waihaha, Waihora and Whanganui fished consistently well during the whole season, but places such as Waitahanui and Four-mile Bay have given poor results compared with past seasons.
