RUGBY LEAGUE

Manukau Beat Blackbal Dominion Special Service.

AUCKLAND, October 17. In a special Rugby League challenge match at Carlaw Park, Manukau, the Auckland club champions, beat Blackball, champion South Island club team, by 23-9, before 18,000 spectators. It was Blackball’s first defeat. They had previously beaten Sydenham-Rakaia, the leading Canterbury team, 43-6, and Petone, the Wellington champion club team, 34-7. The visitors Justified the praise that had been accorded them, showing fine team work and rarely kicked. They were outweighed, however, by an older and more experienced side, and were also beaten for the ball in the scrums. Nevertheless, it was not till the final 10 minutes that the home team put the issue beyond doubt. Manukau led 5-4 at half-time, and 13-9 with 10 minutes to go. Two converted tries to Manukau then gave them a decisive win. The superior weight and greater skill of the Manukau forwards were the deciding factor. Both sets of backs brought off some sparkling movements. The brilliant Blackball five-eighths, C. Mountford, was closely watched, and had few opportunities. One brilliant weaving run of 50 yards thrilled the crowd, but he was overtaken when he had only the full-back to beat.
