I Opening Ceremonies

Though greens are still unfit for play because of the prolonged spell of wet weather, occasion was taken by the Newtown, Karori. Wellington, Lyall Bay, Khaudallah, Eastbourne, Island Bay. Johnsonville, Kelburn, Petone, Central, and Woburn clubs on Saturday afternoon to hold their opening ceremonies for the 194344 season. At the Wellington club's gathering, the president, Mr. T. ,H. Meadows, said the club membership was full, with 185 playing and 51 country and social members He referred to the work the social committee was doing in sending parcels to members and their sons who were cu acThe president. Mr. G. Inniss. at the opening of the Newtown club’s season, said the gathering marked the opening of the club’s fiftieth season. The jubilee was being ushered in by a record membership, made possible by the provision of an extra green. , , , At the opening of the Karori club s season, the president, Mr. A. J. Dixon, referred to the loss the club had sustained by the death of several members, one of whom, Mr. B. G. W. 'Burn, had made a handsome gift for special purposes. There was, he said, a large entry of new members this season. At the Lyall Bay gathering, Mr. J. Norrie, president of the centre, presented the certificates won by the club’s rink at the Manawatu club’s Easter tournament. Reference was made to the extensive alterations which had been made to the pavilion, most of the work having been carried out by club members, and a handsome contribution to the cost of the work having been made by Mr. J. Leuchars, a member of the club. Mr. Petworth, in opening the Khandallah club’s season, said that there was every likelihood of the membership passing 100 this season.
