EXCELLENT RESPONSE

Approximately 05 recruits for the M omen’s Band Service have enrolled in Wellington during the past week. Ihe response to the appeal is considered excellent. the.majority of applicants being young women in the twenties, ihe minimum age at which recruits are accepted is IT, tout there have not been many to apply at this age, nor have older women applied in any numbers, though women are admitted to the service up to 50 years of age. , , • Other centres are alsp having very satisfactory responses, particularly in Taranaki and the Wairarapa, both areas where land girls are much needed. There is a display of dress and working uniforms for land girls in a Wellington store window that has created interest and helped the campaign considerably. Bight of these displays will be seen in various towns throughout New Zealand. Each week they go to a fresh centre. Ibis first week the four main centres claim half the displays. Only strong and healthy applicants able to stand up to farm work are being accepted. The types of work they may be called on to do include milking and dairy work, tractor and team driving, mustering and droving sheep, care of live stock, harvesting, haymaking, and general farm work. They are required to do full-time farm duties, and are not permitted to .perform even part-time domestic work on the farm, except in connexion with their own quarters.
