Record Sum Raised By W.D.F.U. Carnival

In referring to the men of the Merchant Naw for whom the branch has already made nearly 300 flannel undershirts, Mrs. Cheetbam said that they were the Cinderellas of the forces. Ihe shop day was declared open by Mr. G. H. Mackley, recently elected M.l. tor Masterton. ‘ Having personal acquaintance with many of the men of the Merchant Navy, Mr. Mackley said be knew these men would appreciate such sentiments as had been expressed. ' Four large well-stocked stalls, each representing its particular candidate, did brisk business. Mrs. Cheetbam also thanked mothers of the small candidates. The final placings were: Hamish Brunton, Ihuraua; Elmo Cheetham, Mangamahoe; Donald {McGovern, Mauriceville East; Graeme Osborne, Mauriceville West. Those in charge of afternoon tea were kept busy, and each child present received free ice creams. Individual or"anizers and committees and tbe secretary, Miss E. Dagg, and her assistants did’ good work, and an impromptu dance was held in the evening.
