PRACTICAL APPROACH

Problem Of Moral Laxity

A practical approach to the problem of city temptations is being undertaken by the Council of Christian Wotneu in Auckland, who are to open a girls’ hostel there, a step which is in the direction ot providing Christian home lite , toryoung women. ’l'be council was founded seven years ago by Mrs. Alexander Hodge, iu order to offer a solution to the grave problem of moral laxity iu tbe city. Its members have since, day and night, done commendable work helping women and girls and in urging on tbe Government the need for legislation. There are many young women, compelled by manpower regulations, to work away from their own home districts, who have to lodge where they can and .in some cases this has caused distressing consequences. The new hostel, it is felt, will be a contribution toward combating the conditions that arise today.. There will be accommodation for 30 girls, and the hostel will open early in November. The project is interdenominational. The hostel will be part of a property bought six months ago by the liev. Hr. Alexander Hodge and Mrs. Hodge. Dr. Hodge, said tbe institution of such a hostel was an act of faith. Both he and his wife felt that conditions called for some courageous action and they purchased tbe property in their own name.
