CIVILIAN VOTES

Official Counts About Complete

DECLARATIONS TO BE MADE TODAY

With the exception of Waikato and Westland, official counts of general election civilian votes have now been completed for all electorates. The writs (on which is endorsed by the returning 'officer the name of the person declared to be elected) are returnable today, and declarations will be made on the basis of the civilian returns, plus the available forces votes, some of which are official counts and some preliminary figures. Under the Electoral (Members of the Forces) Regulations, 1941, however, there is authority for an amended declaration of the (result of the poll if this should be necessary, even though the writ may have been returned and the time for its return may have expired. The result of the official count of votes from the Pacific is expected within a day or so. Scrutineers were sent from New Zealand to the Pacific aud that has delayed the official count of votes recorded by members of the armed forces in that area. Returning officers with the forces overseas were instructed to concentrate on electorates in the order of majorities, starting with the electorate with the smallest majority first. Tn these circumstances the official count from the Pacific for some of the electorates where there are slender majorities may be available today. The official counts of civilian votes completed at the wekend are given below. To these have been added the figures for the preliminary count of the forces votes, which are also given separately in brackets: —
