DEATH OF CHAMPION GIRL SWIMMER
Swimming enthusiasts who witnessed the record-breaking efforts of the Rotorua, girl swimuicr, N’tiwi Keru, during the nalional intermediate and junior ionsbips in Hamilton in January, I Job, will learn with regret of the Alaori .champion's death last week. On tne ni&t day of that meeting she won the junior girls’ 100 yards title in .the fast time ol 67 l-ssee., a record, which, she later reduced in swimming 66 1-ssee. unpaced. On the second day she equalled the Dominion record of 29 4-ssec. in a heat ot the junior girls’ championslno oO yards. Possessed of a beautiful ‘style and a modest, unassuming . character Nawi Kera was popular With fellow competitors and it was as a result of a friendship which developed with members of the Otago team at Hamilton that her relatives presented to tlie Otago centre the Nawi Kera Challenge Shield, which attaches annually to the 100 yards Otago junior girls’ freestyle championship.
