The War Department has announced that the Secretary of War and the Secretary of the Navy concluded that it was not desirable in the' public interest to proceed at present -with the trials of Rear-Admiral Kimmel and MajorGeneral Short, officers in charge of Hawaii when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbour.

The announcement said it was decided to postpone the proceedings against those officers till such time in the near future as may be decided upon as appropriate. It added that both officers had voluntarily agreed to waive the Statute of Limitations for the duration and six months thereafter. Postponement will not affect the existing rights of the Govern-' ment or the officers concerned.
