Senator Criticizes Policy (Received September 30, 8.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 29. “The High Command has failed to recognize the United Slates’ capacity to create destructive airpower which might have brought. Germany to dust and deteat months ago,” declared Senator Downey, giving evidence before the Senate in support of Senator 'Wbeeler'w Bill delaying the induction of fathers, lie demanded that the army concentrate on air power instead of drafting fathers to build up a vast land army, most of which never can and never will be used. Senator Downey quoted an ‘ undeniable authority” that Germany was now weakening so fast and our airpower growing so rapidly that the effiemnt use of bombers would reduce lhe Nazis quick surrender or terrible destruction. A larger army is a wasteful burden nnd a tragic futility,” the Senator concluded. The “New York Tinies” correspondent in London, Drew Middleton. says that the Allies are losing an opportunity ot knocking Germany out of the war by bombing. “Though the weather conditions have been favourable, the ollies have made only seven big night rinds on German industrial centres this month, compared with 11 last month,” he said. "The reduced number of big night raids is believed to be a result of diverting bombers to tactical targets of iiwinetitar.v importance and lhe transfer ol bombers and crews to other theatres of will'.
