CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Governor-General Opens Campaign For Funds NEW STAMP ISSUE ON SALE “We are fighting this the greatest war known to history in order that our children shall receive from our hands the heritage which we hold in trust for them YVc are fighting that they may live the lives we would have them live, as free and responsible citizens of a nation, an I Empire and a world where tyranny and oppression shall not prevail. Throughout our struggle, therefore, we must never allow ourselves to forget those who are children today. Their spiritual, mental and physical well-being must be a first consideration with us. YY’e cannot do too much for them.” , This was said by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, in an address last night in support of the 1943 health stump campaign. He said his remarks were particularly directed to what could be done for the physical well-being of the children. “YVhen King George V died, it was most fittingly decided that the funds collected for a memorial to that beloved moilarch should be used to build and equip permanent, health camps for the children of New Zealand,” said his Excellency. “There are 16 such eamps in New Zealand (though three have of necessity been handed over to the military authorities), and every year some thousands of ailing children derive-lasting benefit from the treatment and care they receive in these camps. Without them, many ot these children would be deprived of any form of healthful recreation and attention. They play a most important part in New Zealand’s policy of child welfare. Inc proper maintenance of these camps, which is in the hands of the Federation of Health Camps, depends on the support of the public. Tonight I am asking you for your support. “From tomorrow morning a new issue of health stamps will be on sale in every post office in New Zealand, lhere is a ltd. stamp and a 3d. one. In themselves they arc things of beauty and of great interest for. by special permission of the King, the lower denomination, winch is "■reeu, bears a portrait of Princess Margaret, and, the higher, which is brown, one of Princess Elizabeth. Moreover, they are the first triangular stamps ever to be issued in this country. From every one of the lid. stamps you buy, the id. will go to tlie Health Camp Bund, and from every 3d. stamp Id. I commend them to von will all my heart. Use them on vour letters and postcards. It is hoped to raise at least £25.000 in tins way. ■ “I am sure that you will do your share and enable this goal to be attained, tor I know how generous the people of New Zealand are in supporting any really worthwhile cause. This, as I have tried to show, is a cause of the highest possible importance, for the health and happiness of many of the next generation depends upon it.”
