Allied Amphibious Operations CHURCHILL TELLS -■ ' LONDON, June 8. Mr. Churchill, after mentioning his visit to North Africa and the fighting spirit of the troops, told the House of Commons that the amphibious operations which were now pending were of a peculiarly complex and hazardous nature and might prove expensive. The actions planned, had been fitted into their place in the general strategy. Referring to the successes in the war on U-boats, the Prime Minister said that the first week in June had been the “best ever.’ 1 He stated that the Allied Governments had not interfered in the discussions in Algiers between Generals de Gaulle and Giraud. The greatest responsibility lay upon the members of the French Committee of National Liberation; they had only to sink their differences to ensure the rebirth of France.
