WOMEN CONSCRIPTS
Australian Military Service
(Received January 27, 7 p.m.) UANBERRA. January 2i. The decision of the full Cabinet that Australian women are to he conscripted for military service has been announced bv the Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin. Legislation will be introduced in Parliament t„ amend the Defence Act to permit, o, a compulsory call-up of women lor all auxiliary services, to begin immediately. Greatly increased powers have been given to'the Director of Manpower. Mr. \V. C. Wurth. They include: I. Authority to direct, labour to channels where it: is most needed ; 2. Power to enlj up women for compulsory employment : 3. The right, to approve or reject the call-up of men (or the Allied Works Council or other undertaking requiring labour. Previously the Manpower Llopartnient had no power Io divert labour from one job to another, or Io order the transfer of labour from one protected industry to another considered to be more important. In future Mr. Wurth,will have power to decide where any mail or woman in Australia shall work.
