Governor Of Algeria FIGHTING FRENCH ANNOYED (By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright.) (Received January 20, 11.50 p.m.) ALGIERS, January 19. It is officially announced that M. Marcel Peyrouten has been appointed Governor-General of Algeria. He has had several meetings with General Giraud since his arrival in Algeria, on Saturday and has also seen General Eisenhower. M. Peyrouten, who served in Marshal Petain’s Cabinet, resigned from the French Ambassadorship in Argentina after M. Laval's assumption of power last April. Fighting French circles have expressed opposition to his appointment to the high office under General Giraud. WASHINGTON, January 20. Fighting French opinion, both in Washington and London, attacks the appointment of M. Peyrouten. It is stated in London that Peyrouten is not a man with whom the Fighting French can collaborate, while the Washington circles say that going from Darlan to Peyrouten is like jumping from the frying-pan into the fire. One American newspaper says that Peyrouten is a son-in-law of a French defeatist Of the last war who was convicted of having protected German spies. , „ Critics say that the removal of Peyrouten, Nogues and Chatel is necessary before a cleaning-up of the political situation can begin.
